Twitter Job Search: Can Social Networking help with the Recession?

Figures have been released today that unemployment in the UK has passed 2 million, meaning there are 10 job hunters for every single UK jobcentre vacancy advertised. Unforutunately, times are tough.twit

This is where search specialist Workdigital today have stepped in. To help you get the edge in looking for a new job amongst all of the other millions (literally) out there, you can now Tweet a new job vacancy.

Twitter JobSearch will allow you to search the social networking site for new vacancies and will also organise job information.

The Guardian reports, “The pool of data of Twitter is really not valuable until it can be organised,” said the Workdigital head of marketing.

“We scan millions of tweets but also drill down a bit further to create a very strong contextual search. There are about 25,000 jobs mentioned on Twitter and thousands being added every hour.”

The site offers you the choice of searching for specific key words and areas, or browsing ads arranged by sector.

Twitter JobSearch is currently free for job seekers to use. Workdigital are looking at building an advertising-supported service around the site in order to monetise their idea.

The site is still in beta mode and the developers are looking for any improvement ideas, so if you think you can lend a hand, take at look at their buzz page.

If you’re on the hunt for a career change, it might be worth Tweeting about.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
