The highly anticipated 'G2', named the HTC Magic, has been officially announced today at MWC by HTC and Vodafone.
The tablet-style device features a 3.2inch high-resolution QVGA touchscreen and confirming rumours, it ditches the QWERTY keyboard and sports a thinner design at 13.6mm. It uses a trackball and navigation buttons for quick and easy access.
Only the second smartphone to use the Google Android OS, the Magic is a tri-band handset with Bluetooth connectivity, PC synchronisation and GPS. With 3G and WiFi, HTC and Vodafone promise a 'superior mobile internet experience'.
The Magic features a 3.2megapixel camera with autofocus, along with games, media player, popular Google apps and YouTube. The handset will be available in White in the UK, Spain and France, Black in Germany and both colours in Italy.
"The HTC Magic embodies the compact style and sophistication for which HTC has come to be known, with the powerful and intuitive internet experience for which the Android platform was designed,” says Peter Chou, president and CEO, HTC Corporation. “We are proud of our partnership with Vodafone and excited about making the Android-powered HTC Magic available to Vodafone customers in Europe.”
Vodafone informed that the Magic will be available from free on various price plans and can be pre-ordered now ready for release in April.

Vodafone neglected to mention that there would be no ongoing support for this device though. it is not possible to download updates or new ROMS developed by HTC for the Magic. It is also running pretty feeble hardware, not matching the spec from HTC for the Magic. This really should be referred to as the HTC Vodafone in a Magic case… If you buy this expecting to join the rapidly advancing world of Android, then stop – do not buy – you could be locked into an already outdated OS with no possibility of updating without hacking it and risking your warranty.
