MWC 2009: Mobile Phone Chargers To Be Universal By 2012

More news from the MWC 2009, but not about new mobile phone handsets. No, this news is definitely long overdue, as we have all experienced forgetting our phone chargers at some point and then our phone saying “good night” to us, because your friends phone doesn’t use the same charger as yours (which is very frustrating at the time). Now though, out of the MWC comes news of mobile phones to use standardised chargers, which is great news. miniusb1

The GSM Association and up-to-yet 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are all committed to creating and using the same style chargers, which would probably come in a USB style. The aim of this initiative is to be more energy efficient when it comes to the use of mobile phones, where GSM report that they want these chargers to be 50% greener in standby mode than the ones we see now.

This means that by 2012, most new phones should all charge using the same charger i.e. a Nokia would charge using a Samsung issued charger. This could also mean that any other device outside of the mobile phone world such as a sat-nav for example may be able to charge-up using the same charger, but we’ll see about that.

The companies who have already joined the initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, Mobicom Austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone. However I would not be surprised if all mobile phone based companies join, because this surely is a step forward?

  • This is definitely overdue! It will make going on holidays easier as you won’t need to pack 20 different chargers for the family.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
