Following on from my post about getting the latest ATI drivers on your laptop I can now say that this actually works, last night I got my very very dated graphic card (I cant even tell you what version they were except they were released in 2006!) to the new ATI 8.7 version from their website.
So want to know how to do this on your own laptop? Well read on to find out how
- First head over to http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and download their Modder tool, its half way down the page look for the picture that is shown below
- Second if your using Windows XP then you will need to install MSXML 6.0 but if you using Vista this is installed by default so don't worry about this bit. Click here for the MSXML 6.0 download page.
- This is for Vista users only so if your using Windows XP ignore this step. So for Visa users, you will need to disable your UAC (it’s an annoying feature anyway) to do this click here for a guide, most people should follow the forth method.
- Now you need to download the latest ATI drivers for your graphics card, refer to your handbook to find out which ATI card you have if you need to then head over to www.amd.com
- Now you have everything you need so install the MSXML 6.0 pack if you have not done so already and then run the ATI driver installer, but note once it has finished extracting and your on the install screen cancel this as we need the Modder to work its magic first.
- Ok so install the Modder, run it and select the browse option, show it where you let the ATI installer extract the drivers (if you left it at default it should be something like C:\ATI\Support\x.x_windowsversion_dd_ccc_enc_44985)
- It will now do some number crunching, it should not take too long, when its done close the Modder and head over to the folder where the drivers are and run the SETUP.EXE file, follow the steps and say yes to any “Driver is not WHQL certified” this is just a side effect of the Modder, now enjoy your new drivers.
Well that's the end of this guide, if you have any queries or comments feel free to ask me, I believe I put the link to the home page for this Modder in my previous post, if not you can click here to be sent to the site, which has a discussion forum should you have any need to ask any questions.
Happy updating.
