Overview
So it’s happened to the best of us…you’re sat on the train and don’t notice that your phone has fallen out of your pocket or handbag until you actually get off at your stop. You tell yourself not to panic because phones can be replaced but then start kicking yourself because you’ve just managed to loose all those important phone numbers, videos and pictures you’ve taken years to build up.
Just like we wouldn’t dream of not backing up all our important files on our PC, why do we not share the same ethos for our mobile phones? Well, the simple fact is that its just something that isn’t always a top priority. Well, now it should be, especially if it has become one of the must have gadgets that you can’t live without. So when I came across Mobyko, a new free service which lets you back up your phone contacts, texts, photos and videos I thought I would try it out to see how easy it could be used to store all that precious information from my phone.
Review
Now you’re probably thinking that you’ve already heard of other services which offer exactly the same service as Mobyko, so I was quite sceptical when I first heard about it being just ‘another mobile phone back-up service’. For one I thought it would have a lengthy and complicated sign up process which would involve downloading software and involve wires; however surprisingly there was no need for me to download any software or use any wires, all it involved was taking a quick trip to the Mobyko website, following the very simple sign up process, which took about 5 mins and I was all set up and ready to go.
Not only does Mobyko offer a back up service but it has other quirky features includes giving users the option of being able to send SMS messages over the Internet. I know there have been times when forgetfully I have left my phone at home and need to send a message to a friend urgently when at my work desk. Now you could use a pay box to make a call but who now-a-days remembers any of their friends mobile numbers? Certainly not me, however with Mobyko the problem is solved. All you need to do is get yourself down to an Internet connected PC. Log in to your Mobyko account and send them a text message with ease. I thought I would give it a quick try and it worked perfectly first time!
Now if you like changing your handset as often as you change your undies, which could mean deciding to replace a Nokia phone with a Samsung or a Sony phone then the service lets you transfer your phone numbers easily without the mobile phone politics of compatibility. If you also wish to download it to your PC you can do that too.
It seems as though everyone has gone a bit Facebook crazy at the moment, and it certainly looks as though Mobyko is also cashing in on the Facebook frenzy. It has included an application on Facebook, which is free to use and allows you to assign your friends profile photo in Facebook to your mobiles contact entry. This means that whenever your friends call you their Facebook mug shot will show up.
At the moment the service is limited to what it can do however if you upgrade to their premium service, which costs £24.99 a year then you’ll also get 250Mb storage for photos, videos & texts, 100 free texts, dedicated VIP customer support, monthly sync reminders by text and premium emails.
Okay so you get all this free and so far it all sounds good, there must be a catch? Well I can’t find one. I assumed in order to do this they must sell the data so I looked at their privacy policy. It clearly states that they won’t and because its a UK based company you can trust they will stick to their word.
The only extra feature I’d like to see is a mobile RSS news feed reader so I can download my feeds onto new mobiles and maybe an app to go with it. I also noticed that not all phones are supported but it does have most; its easy to see which phones are on their website.
Now if you want to try out the service but aren’t ready yet to commit to forking out approx £2 per month for the premium service, the guys at Mobyko have decided to spread a bit of Mobyko love by offering all our readers the premium service for free! All you need to do is add ‘GAJIT’ as a promotional golden hello and hey presto…away you go get £24 worth of service and peace of mind absolutely free. We Say
The Mobyko service is a free (even the premium for Gaj-IT readers), fast and easy way to back up all that all important mobile phone data. This is great for anyone who has a mobile phone and needs a quick and efficient way of storing their data. Although, it offers some fun and quirky features such as adding your friends Facebook profiles to your phones I think there is still a lot more potential to see what this service can do in the future so I’m going to certainly be watching this space…
