Thumbs of steel: Text messaging up in the UK

Recent data from the Mobile Data Association (MDA) has shown that more than ever, we in the UK love the sound of that little "beep", that holds the promise of a new text message on our phone. Last quarter's UK Mobile Trends Report shows that we have been sending a whopping 1.4 billion SMS messages every week, and not all of them can be credited to Big Brother eviction night. This figure is up from 1.2 billion messages sent per week in September last year.

In comparison, picture and video messaging has only reached 10 million sent weekly UK-wide, which may be quite a bit short of the billion mark but is still a growing aspect of social networking in its own right. The abundance of camera enabled phones today means that MMS's 30% year on year growth shows no signs of weakening in the future.

Finally, mobile internet is also on the rise with 31 thousand new users per week in the UK. Growth in this sector has been at a noticeably slower rate, with consumers being confused as to the costs involved with accessing the net from their Nokia. More price transparency is definitely needed from many service providers in order for us to wiki while walking.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
