All too often stylish glass or mahogany side tables are not crowned with a similarly sophisticated looking sound system. I confess I am one of the guilty ones with my once white speakers that have since developed an unappealing grey-brown colour like a banana that's been living at the back of your fridge since Roxette was number 1 in the charts.

Luckily for the style-unconscious like me, the new release Orb speaker range produces high-quality sound from a very beautiful looking shape. Each speaker is handmade by metalwork artisans and are available in five different finishes, meaning these speakers are bound to match or even enhance the current look you have going in your living room.

It's true though that in life, pretty things aren't always useful things. Take summer dresses in Scotland for instance. The Orb speakers however, look the part but also sound as good as much larger speakers. This is due to using advanced technologies such as earth magnets, Santoprene, Nomex and CCAD voice coils to create a full sound.

So how many Orbs does it take to unscrew a light bulb? Sorry, I mean fill a house with beautiful music? Well the answer depends on you. Your personal audio system can be made from one, two or four individual Orbs. Best of all, you can upgrade your system as your Orb needs grow, without having to completely replace the whole system as is common for other high-end speakers.

For those of you who love your bass so much that you can't remember the last time you had a full pane of glass in your windows, there are also compact subwoofers available which, like the speakers, produce a sound you would expect from a unit that is more expensive and less flattering beside your couch.

Orb speakers are completely manufactured in the USA and can only be bought online to avoid wholesale and retail mark-ups. This sounds like a great idea, but there then comes the concern that with a lack of face-to-face sales staff, there will be a lack of customer service. Not so apparently, as even though you may call and end up speaking directly to an executive, engineer or designer, who better to speak to in order to find out more information on a product than the guys who made it?

Orb speakers are available world-wide and can be purchased from: www.orbaudio.com

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
