It's a universal fact that not everyone has green fingers; even the weeds in my yard have a tendency to die on me. Well technology has once again stepped in to make life livable with the new Digital Pot that aims to make killing your petunias a thing of the past.
Digi pot measures the conditions of the potted soil including water content, temperature and humidity. Instead of telling you the results in the form of boring statistics, the calculations reflected as a changing LCD face on the front of the pot.
While the facial icons on the pot may appear a tad scary, they tell you exactly how the plant is feeling and what its needs are, kind of like a baby. The Digi Pot will "smile" or look distraught to let you know if more or less water is required to keep its happy equilibrium. There is even a "danger" face to make you feel extra guilty at how neglectful you've been.
You can choose whether your plant possesses a male face of a female face, though to be honest, it looks more like the difference between a bee and a grasshopper.
It's powered by a USB interface which not only keeps your pot happily glowing (or not if you've been forgetful with the water again) but also reports on your plant's situation to your computer software.
The idea is great, but I think the design could err more on the classic side to make the pot more suited to all areas of the home and not just next to wherever your iMac is situated. The large glowing face is also a potential source for nightmares when it greets you as you wander into the kitchen for a midnight snack.
To me the planted Digi Pot is like a pet; it lives and grows but instead of the typical eau-de-wet-fur usually associated with a cat or dog, it can smell as fresh as a daisy, or indeed it can smell exactly like a daisy.
