CCL Gamer Review: Are we about to unleash a Gaming Lovers Beast?

Overview

The title for the ultimate of Gaming PCs has been fought over for many years now and it seems that the battle will be joined by a new contender known as the CCL Gamer. This PC hopes to take the crown in an all out brawl that will test not just the running speed but how fast they can handle tasks. So let the battle commence!

Review

Now I am well known for being fussy with my computers so to meet my strict standards, PCs have to be fast, juggle more than two things at once and most of all offer performance where it counts in the gaming arena.

Looking at the specs this machine looks rather hopeful. Although at first I was a little unimpressed by the processor speed, as I read on I started to drool at the fact that this is actually a Quad, which means it has as 4 x 2.4Ghz processor not the standard 2 x 2.4Ghz Duo; shipping out a lot more Intel goodies under it’s bonnet than what I had originally thought.

As I looked at the rest of the kit my mouth started watering up once again because under it’s exterior it is bundled with 4GB of DDR II 667Mhz RAM. For me this amount of RAM would be enough to store all the data from my applications whilst keeping most RAM intensive operating system to date, Vista well and truly stuffed. Also with RAM prices these days costing an extra £20 for an extra gig of DDR2 RAM, I would think you’re getting a fairly great deal as this amount of RAM should suffice for years.

Video wise I was shocked to see it coming with an nVidia GeForce 8800GT, which not only comes with a huge amount of memory but also supports DirectX10 as well! This means that not only will this card kick seven bells out of all the most recent of games but will also more than handle all of the cutting edge games coming out on the market in the many months to come.

This machine also comes with two hard drives, one which is exclusively for the operating system which I can tell you is a beast of a hard drive, its runs at 10,000rpm and not the standard 7,200rpm’s of most standard hard drives on the market. If you’re reading this and wonder what the hell I am talking about, basically the faster the rpm number is the quicker the hard drive is at reading/writing data to the disk, so as you can see that this is a very fast hard drive and means that the operating system will be quick enough to keep up with your many Window based activities.

The other hard drive whilst being a lot slower than the main hard drive is more than adequate for your gaming/storage needs and as the operating system is on another hard drive entirely this will mean that the system can run your games and movies while running the operating system independently.

Finally this machine comes with a rather funky case, which makes a nice change from the bog standard cases you get nowadays, and with the side panels being clear you can watch this little beast running whilst it’s switched on.

The Gaj Verdict

Design 9/10
Usability 10/10
Features 8/10
Value 8/10

We Say

With the lack of sound card, monitor and the other essentials, this PC is only for the most enthusiastic of owners. But if you’re one of those people this is one fine piece of kit and would look the pride and joy in any PC fanatic’s house.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
