While all the big telco company ads will have you think that superfast broadband is guaranteed as part of your new package, the truth is, they’re lying. Over 40 per cent of all broadband connections in the UK are still below 2Mbps.
This figure comes from the Office of National Statistics and is based on headline speed. The fact that it is not based on actual throughput speeds, means that the number of people with broadband speed at the 2Mbps mark could even be higher.
This figure is in contrast to the one provided last year by market regulator, Ofcom, which found “the average headline speed has doubled in a year to reach 4.6Mb/sec”.
So do these figures mean that we’ve actually gone backwards in our quest for better broadband? Perhaps its time to test yours to make sure you’re getting the speed you’re paying for.

Here in South-Africa… 90% of all broadband connections are between 384kbps and 512kbps, with a scant 10% getting up to 4MBps (the fastast broadband availible here) and it costs an arm, a leg and then some. lol
we pay about R500 ($50) per month for 384kbps with a 3Gb data cap.
I envy the UK broadband… :P
