Sonim XP3 - Future record holder?

Following up its Guinness World Record holding XP1 (A.K.A the ToughPhone) is the XP3; the newest edition to Sonim’s Xtreme Performance range.

Designed with the clear intention of being the worlds first rugged, waterproof GSM mobile phone and to withstand even more abuse than its predecessor, this newest incarnation is capable of taking a full submersion of up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. It’s also capable of withstanding temperatures as high as +60C and as low as -20C. Brrrrr.

Why stop there though; its been assigned a military spec rating of 810F against salt, fog humidity, transport and thermal shock. Nothing has been overlooked here and even the keypad is tested over a half a million times to make sure it’s up to the job at hand; Sonim is so confident in its product that they even offer an unconditional 3 year warranty, no matter how you broke it.

Of course, given the tasks this rambo-phone was designed for, it wouldn’t be much use if it stopped working after an hour; thankfully it comes with a reported battery life of 9 days on standby or 5.5 hours talk time. Not too shabby indeed.

We’re a little confused as to the actual release; we’ve taken a look at www.sonimxp3.com and whilst there is a ‘buy now’ button it only leads to a page to register your interest and the press release says November 17th. So, either it’s out, or it will be soon, we’re going with the latter.

Interestingly if you look around that site to ‘find stockists’ for the UK, it links to Vodafone online, so we wonder if they will be the sole UK network carrier? The XP3 will also be available in Sweden, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Norway.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
