25% Increase in Mobile Internet Usage – 3rd Quarter of 2008

With an increasing number of smart phones which now include unlimited internet access it is no wonder that Nielsen Online are claiming that the number of Brits accessing the internet via their mobile phone devices has increased by 25% in the 3rd quarter of 2008 and mobile internet usage has grown eight times faster than PC-based internet growth.

As more and more people see the internet as a necessity for them to access the news, weather, email and for blogging folk like us – their sites, mobile phone manufacturers have exploited this and you will now see that most of the top phones, like the Apple iPhone and Nokia N96 readily available on the marketplace all include the functionality to access the internet with ease.

I predict that this figure is set to rise as it is not only the tech savvy of us who are now accessing the internet via our mobile phones, because as social networking sites such as Facebook grow this will also mean that the general public will also start opting for the mobile internet method.

However, I wonder what effect this will have on people accessing the internet via their home or work PCs? For me, accessing the internet via my mobile is only something which is a short term measure whilst I’m at work or on the train home but for more sophisticated usage of the internet I will usually opt to use my PC internet access.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
