Microsoft Finally Bids Adieu to Internet Explorer 6

Microsoft's internet browser Internet Explorer is on to its 9th iteration, but there are folks around which are still stuck with older versions and some of them are so far behind in the process of upgradation that they are still using Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft had been urging its users to junk older versions and switch to the latest version. Now, the company has finally pulled the plug on its Internet Explorer 6. It had been a pretty good decade long run for Internet Explorer 6.

According to Windows Team Blog, "IE6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and we've been as eager as anyone to see it go away. In fact, we launched the IE6 Countdown site last March to help accelerate the process." The browser does not support new protocols such as HTML5 and it also uses non-standard rendering.

While IE 6 now has less than 1 percent market share in the US, it still has large following in countries like China. 25.2 percent of the internet users in China are still using IE 6. In other countries, situation is a little less dire. Ukraine, Philippines, Mexico, Portugal and Czech Republic only have about one percent of their internet users still hooked to IE 6.

So, which version of Internet Explorer are you using? That is, if you are using Internet Explorer at all.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
