Social gaming is on the rise and prominent social gaming company PopCap now has solid numbers to prove this fact. According to a survey conducted by the gaming company and market research firm Information Solutions Group, about 118.5 million people in the US and UK try their hands at social gaming at least once a week.

Not only the number of people playing social games is swelling, but these players are now also more amenable to spend money. Social games may look innocuous, but they have pretty good track record of luring its users to part from hard earned money. The survey shows that about 31 million social gamers have bought virtual goods for their online world. The numbers are up 86 percent from the last year.
Gaming is generally considered to male-centric, but social gaming bucks the trend with female accounting for 55 percent of its user base. An average first time social gamer is more likely to be a woman in her fifties. The survey also shows that 29 percent of the gamers in UK use their smartphone for playing these games while 13 percent of the gamers make best of their feature phone and satisfy their gaming pangs with their dumb phone. Tablets still have to penetrate the market and only 8 percent of the gamers play these games on their tablet device.
