Barnes and Nobel Unveil Nook Tablet: Amazon Fire to Feel the Pinch

Barnes and Nobel announced Nook Tablet and it did not disappoint the market. The tablet, along with Kindle Fire, is sure to set up a sub-segment within the tablet segment. The $249 tablet is about $50 dearer than Kindle Fire, but is still about 50 percent the price of cheapest iPad. B&N Nook will certainly provide a fillip to low cost, low-frills tablet market.

The seven inch tablet comes with a color screen, very much on the lines of its predecessor Nook Color and competitor Kindle Fire. The slate will have in-built 16 GB of memory which would be expandable to 32 GB with the aid of an SD card. The tablet packs a dual core processor under its hood and sports Wi-Fi connectivity. The tablet weighs 14.1 ounce and the parent company claims that its battery is calibrated to provide you up to 11.5 hours of reading pleasure. However, if you are planning to run videos, then the batteries would last up to nine hours.

The tablet will also support a wide variety of document formats such as ePUB format, which is the most popular format for e-books. Barnes and Nobel is also hawking its 'VividView' display, which it claims to be  "the world’s finest screen for readability and viewing content.” The tablet will also come preloaded with various apps such as Hulu Plus, Pandora and Netflix. Barnes and Nobel has about 2.5 million titles in its online bookstore.

Barnes and Nobel has started taking pre-orders and the tablet will hit the stores in the US late next week. The company also announced reducing the price of its Nook Simple Touch reader to $99.
