Windows 8 Details Emerge: Explorer Gets Ribbon UI

Among all the highly anticipated techs, Windows 8 has a special space. And now Microsoft has detailed some tweaks it has made to Internet Explorer for Windows 8. The most prominent change is that now Explorer sports a ribbon UI, just like Microsoft Office'. Interestingly, it is not yet clear whether the video exhorting all the virtues of new IE was accidently posted by Microsoft or not.

According to Steven Sinofsky, project leader for Windows 8, said, "Windows 8 is about reimagining Windows, so we took on the challenge to improve the most widely used desktop tool (except maybe for Solitaire) in Windows.” Apparently, Microsoft is also looking to "improve the usage experience". Oh, the vagaries of tech world!

Microsoft has made use of anonymously collected data to find the commands which are most used by IE users. Now, the company has put those commands in plain sight on the ribbon, while other commands will be hidden to clear out the clutter. The analysis of anonymous data also threw some interesting nuggets of information. Who would have thought that Top 10 commands account of 81 percent of usage. Among these most popular commands are cut and paste.

Microsoft is also bringing back a couple of features which were removed in Vista and Windows 7. The "Up" button from XP will be back and so will "copy to" and "Send to" commands. The new changes show that Microsoft is striving to make Windows 8 an all-purpose platform and not for just touch screens or tablets.
