Internet has come a long way and Akamai has taken it upon itself to review Broadband performance across the globe. According to a recent report, Asia has emerged as Broadband powerhouse. Top three spots for internet speed has been filled by Asian countries viz. South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.
South Korea tops the list with an average broadband speed of 14.4 Mbps in the first quarter of 2011, whereas the average global speed stood at mere 2.1 Mbps. Hong Kong and Japan grabbed second and third spot with 9.2 Mbps and 8.1 Mbps broadband speed. The world is also moving away from narrowband and the technology saw 15 percent drop in its use in the first quarter.
As for broadband connectivity, 61 cities in Japan made it to the top 100 connected cities in the world. South Korea and Hong Kong contributed five cities each. US has 18 cities included in he list. Lyse in Norway is the fastest city in Europe and is ranked 33rd globally.
The report also studied internet penetration. The top ten countries contributed 70 percent of the total web traffic. The internet connectivity increased 5.5 percent on QoQ basis, whereas year on year increase stood at 20 percent.
