If you want to be somebody these days you have to keep on top of social networking. Whether you like it or not, it's the way of the world these days. There have been concerns over the impact of the digital world on our social life, BT recently called for a 'telecommunications diet' , but ultimately if Twitter and Facebook allow you to connect to people who share your interests and passions which is a great tool.
Unless you've been in a bubble the past few weeks you'd have heard about Google+ the latest home of the digital elite. Despite a strong start by Google's latest service Facebook at first seemed unconcerned there was no moaning from Zuckerberg and he even jumped into it himself, confirming he had his own account. But now that + has grown an astonishing amount (despite its exclusivity) team Facebook are starting to worry.
Just like Apple and the patent battles, Facebook, rather than to make their social network more attractive than Google+ have resorted to underhand tactics. They have started to ban advertisements for +
You could sort of understand if Google had bought a s*** load of adverts and splattered them all over Facebook, but the advert in question was a personal advert.
App developer Michael Lee Johnson, clearly a guy with his finger on the tech pulse decided to buy himself an advert to put on Facebook to encourage people to add him on +. The ad read: “If you’re lucky enough to have a Google+ account, add Michael Lee Johnson, Internet Geek, App Developer, Technological Virtuoso.”
Or at least to used to until this happened: “Your account has been disabled. All of your adverts have been stopped and should not be run again on the site under any circumstances. Generally, we disable an account if too many of its adverts violate our Terms of Use or Advertising guidelines. Unfortunately we cannot provide you with the specific violations that have been deemed abusive. Please review our Terms of Use and Advertising guidelines if you have any further questions.”
So what does this mean? Is Facebook just being childish or is it genuinely concerned about the future.
