New Jailbreak Fixes iPhone Bug Before Apple

Anyone who knows their stuff about iPhones will be able to give two good reasons to Jailbreak. Firstly it does what it says on the tin Jailbreaks; it liberates you're smartphone from the tyranny of Apple and gives you the opportunity to use the phone you bought with your own hard earned cash, your own way. Secondly it's legal now, so the only worry is the chance of bricking which shouldn’t happen if you do it properly. But now there's a third reason and it's a significant one.

The latest jailbreak for iPhones which was published yesterday exploits a zero-day bug in iOS and enables a fix claim security experts warn. This means that those with unbroken phones will have to wait for an official security patch from Apple in order to fix the bug which means iPhones which aren't Jailbroken are left vulnerable until Apple get their fingers out.

To be fair though, it shouldn't take too long for Apple to sort the fix, they don't tend to treat bugs and vulnerabilities lightly. But they've got to be worried about the possibility of Jailbreaking fixing bugs before them. It could attract a whole new target audience.

The bug itself could allow any web link to be redirected to a malicious file that exploits the vulnerability to install malware instead of simply jailbreaking a device, so exploits do not have to rely on tricking punters into opening malicious PDF files.

I’m sure Apple will have fixed this well before the jailbreakers, the difference is that Apple test, test and test again to make sure it works and doesn’t break anything else. Jailbreakers release it as soon as it’s done and let the public find the faults.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
