You can never be too rich or too thin and looks like Apple is taking this adage to a new height. iPhone is already among the more petite and svelte smartphones around, but that's not good enough for Apple, which is now trying to shave off a few MMs off the phone. According to Wall Street Journal, the company's next offering is expected to much lighter and thinner than the current version. iPhone 5 is also likely to be more technically complicated.
The WSJ report also claims that there would be some technical changes as well. Instead of the Infineon chip, iPhone 5 is likely to have Qualcomm's new wireless baseband chips. It has long been rumored that iPhone 5 will be compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks. But no such information is available about Qualcomm chip.
Apple iPhone is continuing its ascension and recently knocked RIM BlackBerry down to notch up second position in the smartphone market. However, it needs to work hard for sprinting past Android, which has the clear benefit of the OS being licensed to different manufacturers. Though there are rumors that Apple may come up with iPhone Mini or iPhone Prepaid to tap bigger markets, it is more likely that the Cupertino company would relegate iPhone 3GS to Entry Level iPhone position.
Another arrow in Apple's quiver is to strike new carrier partnerships. After launching Verizon iPhone earlier this year, the company is now rumored to be in talks with Sprint. The agreement would be a win-win situation for both the companies. Apple will get access to massive subscriber base, where as Sprint is in dire need of a superstar performer to tackle the aftermath of AT&T and T-Mobile merger.
