Google seems to be on the revamping spree and it is working on decluttering the UIs of its services. For the starter, the search page has been revamped and now features a somewhat disconcerting black strip on the top. The search result page looks more like Yahoo search page, albeit with slightly better search results. So, while Google is cleaning it up, Gmail is also going to get a bit of nip and tuck.
Some of the new features are now available for your perusal. You can click on new themes which will be automatically be customized according to your preferences. Google Calendar will also be given a makeover. The overall idea is to make the features more user friendly and intuitive. The calendar view tabs will now be collapsed by default, thus making the UI more streamlined. However, it may be expanded by clicking on an accompanying arrow.
It also provides the option of retaining the older style of Calendar. For this purpose, you can choose "Classic" style. Google is giving itself a massive makeover in the wake of introduction of its new social networking venture, Google+. Essentially, Google is trying to make all its offering uniform in appearance, so as to enhance user experience.
However, the company is planning to introduce the new features in a staggered manner. Currently, you can fiddle around with graphics and color combination for UI. The option is accessible through Themes tab under Settings. Though, Google's attempt to make all its online service look consistent is laudable and is certainly a good move for establishing brand recognition. However, the new UI do look a tad too insipid. In the coming weeks, we will get to see new changes and new features, so keep watching this space.
