HP is not keeping all its eggs in one basket. Though, the company is now prepping to launch its TouchPad tablet in the United States, it is also contemplating working on a Windows 8 powered tablet. TouchPad works on WebOS platform, which the company had received as a part of its Palm acquisition. We yet have to see the performance of WebOS tablet but looks like HP is willing to diversify its investments.
In a recent interview, Phil McKinney, President and CTO of HP said that the company "could be" working on Windows 8 tablets, but refused to provide further details. Though, he said that the company is "working very closely with Microsoft." If HP is really working on Windows 8 tablets, then it would be interesting to see how the company manages to position them in the market.
Despite its collaboration with Microsoft, HP is not going to abandon WebOS, in fact it is working hard to spread WebOS around. The company is rumored to be in talks with Samsung for the licensing of the platform. If successful, we may get to see several WebOS running tabs in the future. But did this mean Samsung is losing its faith in Android. The company currently has a number of smartphones and tablets using Google's mobile platform. Samsung was quick to address the issue and announced that everything is good between it and Google.
If HP is really looking to make WebOS mainstream, then it has a lot at stake with its TouchPad. The tablet's performance will decide the future of WebOS.
