Patent Rivalry Turns Sour: Apple Cuts Processor Ties with Samsung

Apple and Samsung are engaged in a bitter legal fight, with both the companies accusing each other of patent infringement. Interestingly, Samsung also happens to be one of the biggest suppliers of various components for Apple. Initially, it looked like that both the companies would be able to keep their legal woes and business relations separate, but finally the stress is taking its toll and the companies' relationship has started getting strained.

Samsung manufactures processor components for Apple and these components are used in various Apple products such as iPhone and iPad. However, instead of renewing the contract, Apple has now decided to hand over the job to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. So, if you care about the invisible, under the hood parts of your beloved iPhone, then you should know that A6 chips would come from a Taiwanese manufacturer and not from Samsung.

Apple had been courting TSMC before its legal scuffle with Samsung started. TSMC is currently involved in manufacturing processor components for several other companies. It looks like the beginning of the end of Apple-Samsung relationship.

However, termination of the contract is not the only blow Samsung had to face lately. The company had filed an appeal for access to early designs of upcoming Apple products. The appeal fell flat as the Judge refused to grant any such permission. Ironically, earlier Apple had made the similar demand about Samsung products and was granted permission by the court.
