Sony Ready To Drop PS3 Price To £179.99

Sony are still trying to make for the PSN-gate and are expected to drop the price of their PS3 console this August down to a bargain-bin price of £179.99.

The report has suggested that the power-house will be slashed in time for this year's Gamescom and will be the first time the console has been below a £200 price point.

Gaming blog CVG broke the news and said that industry "insiders" predict that Sony will drop the price to £200 in the wake of a new version which went on sale in Japan and is cheaper to produce and uses less power - paving the way for a discount. MVC has gone a step further suggesting the new price point is actually going to be a ludicrously cheap £179.99.

Codemasters boss Rod Cousens reckons the price drop is inevitable and suggested: “I would anticipate a further price cut on existing consoles prior to Christmas. It’ll probably happen around September and Gamescom may be interesting. He also added: "There’s also time for a further cut next year, before Wii U is out.”

Industry analyst Nick Parker added: “£199.99 makes sense as it keeps Sony’s options open for another drop, but they could be more aggressive. Microsoft wants to be No.1 but I expect it is adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach with possible new value-added deals on Kinect.”

Earlier this month a ‘new PS3’ was unveiled in Japan with the revamped device expected to be cheaper to produce, lighter on power consumption and increase performance of the third-generation PlayStation console.

Although there are rumours of a new Xbox console next year, nothing has been confirmed and Microsoft might have to get creative to stay competitive. Hopefully this will mean more price cuts but we expect to see better Kinect bundles and other goodies to entice gamers to the 360 side of the fence. Either way, there could be some real bargains on the way
