Onlive Gaming Coming To A TV And Tablet, Simultaneously, Near You

Onlive the game streaming service, which will come to our shores in the autumn, has shown off some clever features that will come with the service and one impressive one on show at E3 is where your PC will push games directly to your tablet device.

The Onlive service allows you to sign into your Onlive account from both smartphone or tablet and lets you play games on your portable device that would normally take a costly PC gaming rig to achieve.

The Onlive service also allows you to achieve a WiiU dual-screen situation where games played on the iPad or Android tablet are also viewable on TV screen a la WiiU .

“With cloud gaming, you can play games anywhere you want, on any device and you can combine them in anyway you want” said OnLive’s CEO Steve Perlman.

We’ve discovered that UK users can get at Onlive’s US servers, and even play tons of 30-minute demos of full games.

We fired it up on a our trusty Mac Book to find the service is pretty robust even if we were connected to the US servers. Onlive have stated this in no way indicative on what UK will get when the service comes to our shores. But it's nice to see the service working pretty well on a questionable connection - it certainly bodes well for the future.

The subscription-based service, which will no doubt make it onto Apple’s iPad via a free app, will make lots of money for Onlive, but how is Apple going to get its slice of the pie? We can see the Cupertino company placing all sorts of obstacles in this one’s way.

Android, on the other hand, lets any old riff-raff in, so we’ll expect to see this week’s Onlive mobile E3 demo running on Google-powered hardware rather than Apple’s.

The Onlive player app is yet to be released but should coincide with the UK launch of the service in October.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
