The Nintendo U is at risk of becoming a console calamity before it's even released. Analysts aren't convinced of its potential and with the 3DS launch dampened by the lack of strong launch titles, it seems the U is at risk of doing the same. When you think Wii, you think Ant and Dec on a cream sofa having a whale of a time on Mario Karts, not Killer Freaks from Outer Space which is Ubisoft's Wii U offering.
There will be some who think that the title is awesome, these people hold Bart Simpson as their role model. It's not just the title that's irritating either, it's the premise. In a time when video games have novel worthy plots we have Ubisoft's version of a cutting edge game, an FPS in which players become one of the last survivors on Earth after it has been invaded by swarms of aliens (killer freaks.) That, reminds of something, that's right, practically every other game ever.
To be fair, the touch-screen controller adds a bit of an interesting twist will be used as an additional viewpoint, where in multiplayer one person can send aliens to hunt down and kill others. But that's hardly enough to claim “Killer Freaks will make the most of all the fantastic capabilities of the Wii U and provide hardcore players with a gaming experience like no other they have seen or played before.”
Really? I'm not convinced. There's no doubt it will be fun, for a day or so. But it doesn't seem to be the type of game that justified buying a brand new console for. If Killer Freaks From Outer Space makes the most of the U then there can't be much on offer.
But, if the game is as bad as it sounds Ubisoft can easily redeem themselves with Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon, Rabbids and a new sports franchise. All coming to the Wii U
