Moshi Monsters (Facebook For Kids) Hits 20 Million Users

To all those who worry about your children on Facebook; there's a much creepier threat going by the name of Moshi Monsters. It's growing at such an alarming rate that it already has 20 million registered users, or in other words, 1 in 2 UK children aged between 6 and 12.

The UK based children's social network game offers an online rip off of pokemon in which  players adopt and care for a pet monster, solving puzzles which leads to rewards called rox; these can be used as currency to buy items for the adopted monster, such as clothing, foodstuffs and home decor items; allowing children a safe and colourful place to play online.

The success of Moshi (like Angry Birds) is leading the game creators into lucrative new markets such as toys, books and trading cards, meaning that Moshi Monsters is expected to generate over £60 million in 2011.

It's great to see a positive approach to child/internet interaction instead of a blanket ban; over protection is pretty harmful, but then is Moshi going to encourage too much time at the computer, I can see kids getting obsessed. Please parents get your kids a book or a football now, otherwise in a few more years they'll discover WOW and you'll never see them again.

And one more thing. How long until Zuckerberg gets involved?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
