Would 2011 be the Year of Two iPads: iPad 3 May Arrive by the End of the Year

Recently we had heard about Apple finalizing the part suppliers for iPad 3. Well, that was a bit too quick, as Apple had released its iPad 2 only a little time back. But seems like that the company has set some very narrowly-spaced milestones for itself and is on its way to accomplish these tasks.

A Hong-Kong based research firm CLSA has claimed that Apple is preparing to launch the third version of its knock out tablet by the end of this year. What more, the tablet is expected to be 4G capable. We are very tempted to take this rumor at its face value but there are just too many variables which say that this rumor is going to remain just a rumor.

Apple is currently in the process of launching the next iteration of iPhone and the new phone is likely to remain a 3G device. Apple had earlier stated that upgrading to 4G means some intricate changes in the device and such changes are generally very time consuming. It does not seem like that the company has enough time at its disposal if it has to redesign its tablet by the end of this year. And if a 4G device has to come out of Apple stable, then we are certain that it would be iPhone not iPad.

Another rumor is regarding the use of retina display. This rumor is not new either. The tablet was supposed to come out with this superior display for its second avatar, but that never happened. However, the $500 question would be why Apple want to release iPad 3 in the same calendar year. iPad 2 has roaring demand and the units are still in backorder. Most of the countries have thriving grey market for iPad 2. In such scenario, it does not seem likely that Apple would be pushing its limits to release a new version anytime soon.

I hope this is right as the iPad wasn’t really a good enough update for me to bother upgrading. However, I seriously doubt they will release this year. They can’t make enough iPad2 so why bother with another update?

Especially considering that other companies aren’t even getting close to Apples tablet.

  • But two iPads in a single year does not sound like a good marketing strategy. After all, it’s difficult to drop 500+ dollars for something, only to see it going obsolete in six months.
