Every now and then, we come across reports about cell phone radiations' impact on birds' population or bees' health. However, this time WHO has chimed in and the organization is concerned about cell phones' impact on human health. WHO cancer specialists have said that the use of mobile phones may increase the chances of contracting certain types of cancers and for the sake of their own health, the users should seek out new ways for reducing their exposure to radiations.
The panel making the recommendation consisted of 31 scientists and after reviewing the information, they have suggested that cell phones should be categorized under "possibly carcinogenic" section. The same section includes chloroform, coffee and lead as well. Well, it actually includes pickled vegetables as well. However, the latest verdict is a departure from the previous stance of the organization. WHO had earlier said that there is no conclusive proof that mobile phone leads to cancer.
The results have led to war of words between different factions. Various activist groups are planning to use the verdict in their fight against cell phone companies, whereas the industry is trying to downplay the significance of the proclamation. They have said that the group did not conduct any new research and merely rehashed the previous studies.
The US Food and Drug Administration is of the view that "the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell phones with any health problems.” However, a later study conducted in the US concluded that cell phone usage does alter brain cell activity. There are differing views, but all the parties admit that there is need to carry out further studies to establish the proper results.
