Allegedly, Microsoft is working on Windows 8 and the operating system is likely to be a mish-mash of desktop operating system and mobile OS. So, we should be forgiven if we thought Google was going to do the same with its Chrome OS. The company has made it clear that it has no intention extending the platform to tablets or smartphones. And that the territories are clearly marked for Android and Chrome. You get Android on your smartphones and tablets and Chrome on your notebook. The status-quo will be maintained at least for the time being.

Though, Google conceded that Chrome is meant to be an OS suited for various form factors but it is going to remain limited to notebooks for quite some time. So, sorry, there won't be any Chrome powered tablets. Google has also set up a Chrome center in Taiwan, which will help the company in collaborating with more OEMs.

Industrial analysts think that Google strategy makes sense, since the company would require tremendous marketing resources if it has to compete with full fledged OS like Windows. The company has already done so with Android, but mobile OS was pretty unsaturated in comparison to desktop OS market. Chrome happens to be somewhere between mobile and desktop OS, though the situation may prove to be blessing in disguise, if marketed properly.

Google also stated that currently there are about 160 million users of the operating system, almost double from the last year. Its popularity is bound to increase, once Google gets more OEMs on board. Currently the company is collaborating with Samsung and Acer for Chrome Notebooks.

Of course they are, if companies don’t copy Apple, they fail.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
