Just a couple of days back, there were rumors regarding Amazon making a foray into mobile phone and tablet segment and now some new details have emerged and these show that the company is really serious about its new venture. As detailed earlier, the e-tailer is looking to introduce a full family of Android devices.
The family is likely to include one entry level tablet, which will have a dual core Tegra 2 processor. The tablet has been codenamed 'Coyote'. This tablet will be supplemented by another top of the line tablet which will sport a quad core processor, Tegra 3 T30. Codenamed 'Hollywood', this tablet is expected to deliver graphics at 3 times higher speed.
Amazon is planning to release its tablets by the end of this year, latest and Tegra 3 processors, rumored to be used for 'Hollywood' tablet, have yet to make their debut. There were some speculations about the launch in summer season, but this can be safely thrown in the bin now. Coming from Amazon stable, we would expect the tablets to have smooth reading experience, but if you are counting on getting an E-ink display, then be prepared to be disappointed. The company CEO clearly stated that E-ink is not "ready for prime time."
Amazon rival Barnes & Noble recently launched its own Nook Android App store on Nook Color. The store's success shows that the users are willing to do more with their e-readers, whereas the composition of its most popular apps showed that once sub-$500 tablets arrive on the scene, people would be more inclined to buy a multipurpose tablet than a dedicated reader. With both a low-end and a top of the line tablet, Amazon seems to have hedged its bets. Keep watching this space for more updates.
