Barnes & Noble's recently updated its Nook Color and offered Android apps on it. The company has now announced that the store crossed the million downloads mark. Well, the numbers may not sound big enough, but keeping in view that Nook Color is basically an e-reader and not a full-fledged tablet, the feat is certainly impressive. This also goes to show that given a choice, people are willing to do much more on their e-readers than merely read th books.
Nook Color runs Android 2.2 or Froyo flavor and though it is not a tablet-friendly version of Android, the response has been pretty good so far. The recent upgrade also gave Nook Color Flash support and email. By the way, Nook Apps store contain some impressive and already wildly popular apps such as Angry Birds and Drawing Pad.
Nook Color certainly lacks the processing power of the other tablets, but at $250 a pop, it certainly makes for one hell of an entry level tablet with soothing reading experience. And if you are looking for a device which is not a mere e-reader like Amazon Kindle, but is not Apple iPad either, then Nook Color seems like a safe bet.
Barnes & Noble's provided some interesting stats. Angry Birds turned out to be its most popular paid app, whereas Drawing Pad took the second spot. Solitaire, Aces Jewel Hunt and Astraware Mahjong completed the top 5 list for paid apps. It is a bit ironic that the top 5 spots went to the games, on a device which is primarily meant for reading books and magazines. Though in the free category, the top spots went to Fliq Calendar and Fliq Notes. One million download mark may not be a major milestone but it bodes well for this e-reader-tablet hybrid.
