Is Your Cellphone Killing Honeybees?

Cellphones have been blamed for many things ranging from brain tumors to road accidents. However, now the essential device is being blamed for 'Colony Collapse Disorder', a phenomenon pertaining to disappearing bees. Scientists have been noticing the dwindling population of bees throughout the world and though, they are not able to pinpoint the causes behind this, but cellphones radiations have been counted as a big culprit.

According to a study conducted by the Swiss Institute of Technology, cellphone radiations are not only damaging bees' health, but may also be responsible for their high death rate. Bees perform a very important service of pollinating various agricultural crops. For this purpose, researcher Daniel Favre tested bees' reactions to cellphone radiations in different modes. He concluded that mobile phones dramatically affect the wellbeing of honeybees. According to the report, the radiations may lead to disorientation among the bees and may affect them so intensely that they may not be able to find their way back to their hives.

However, before you get consumed by guilt and throw your cellphone in garbage bin, here is some good news. The report also stated that mercifully most of the mobile phones are not in close vicinity to honeybee population and thus may not be very damaging to them in the current scenario. But the report also cautioned that further studies need to be conducted to determine the impact of these radiations on honeybees when the apparatus is not in the close vicinity.
