No, it's not First of April and no, we are not kidding either. However, according to a latest report issued by pyramid Research, a market research company, Microsoft's mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 is all poised to sprint past Android by 2015. Not only Android, but it will also overtake all other mobile operating systems to become the highest selling mobile OS in 2015.
Last time we checked, Windows Phone 7 had an abysmal 7 percent market share in the US whereas its global standing at about 2.5 percent is even more pitiable. But hey, we are still left with 3 years and anything can happen during this time period. Though, we think there need to be some apocalypse of a massive scale for this prediction to come true.
Ideally, one should stop reading this report after the above forecast but wait, rest of the report is a tad more plausible. So here we go, the report also claims that during 2011, smartphones are expected to account for 27 percent of total mobile phones, however, the market share is expected to double to 53 percent in 2015. Though, it would not mean there would be a nice happy world where everyone is tapping on their 4G or 6G enabled phones. There will be vast difference in the demand patterns in the different areas of the world.
Africa and Middle East are expected to be major growth drivers for smartphone surge. Though, these areas will pump the demand for low-end smartphones and touch screen feature phones. The developed world, on the other hand will continue its quest for bigger and better technology.
So, all in all, the report gives us some factoids which are already well known, apart from that one zinger about WP7. But hey, if this report can make a couple of Microsofties feel good for a while, then who the hell are we to rain on their parade. So rock on, guys!
