Apple Reigns Supreme in App World

Though, every tech company and their grandma are coming up with their app ecosystem, the original app master Apple still holds the dominant position in the market.  However, it is getting chased by a more agile competitor Google. According to iSuppli, Apple currently dominates app market with 85 percent of global app revenue share. Though, this year the share is going to tumble to 77 percent. Google is not doing bad either, the company is all set to increase its app revenue by 300 percent this year. The internet search behemoth will see its coffers swell by $425 million via apps.

But it's not all about winners, there are some losers too. RIM seems to be holding well to its downward trajectory, just like its performance in the mobile phone segment, the company is slipping in the app market as well. RIM did well in 2010 and was behind only Apple, but 2011 is a whole new ballgame. RIM is now trailing not only Apple but also Google. It is not that the Canadian company is not working towards pimping its app market, which grew 69.2 percent in 2011. However, its apps were downloaded only 772.2 million times, the figure which looks really dismal compared to Apple and Google.

While Apple lead the pack with 10.3 billion downloads, Google also did fairly well with its 5.8 billion downloads. Third place RIM, of course, could not break the billion downloads mark. This year, 18.1 billion downloads are expected, bringing $3.8 billion for the companies, out of which $2.9 billion will to go to the Cupertino company's bank accounts. Between 2008 and 2010, App revenue grew ten-fold, from $206.1 million to $2.1 billion. However, the report did not specify how much of this revenue has been generated by ubiquitous fart apps.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
