Microsoft Denies WP7 Update to Users Resorting to Unofficial Codes

Microsoft is back, doing what it does best, that is controlling its customers with tight fist. While the company rolled out its build 7392 of its Windows Phone 7 update, it completely bypassed WP7 users who had chosen to get their platform updated via unofficial codes. Microsoft had earlier warned such free spirits that if they go down the unofficial path, their phone would not be able to get any update beyond build 7390, and now the company has put its threat in practice.

Though, if we look at WP7's market share, we do not think that the company can afford being so tyrannical. So, Microsoft, very kindly, talked about the way out as well, which is to take the handset back to the manufacturer. Some solution, huh! Microsoft also said that in future it may come up with solution so that the adventurers may also get the updates along with their rule-abiding brethren. However, you do not need to fret as build 7392 is not a major update in any case. All it does is to address the problem related to “nine fraudulent third-party digital certificates.”

The Microsoft warning sounds a bit too harsh and there are several reasons for this. It is difficult to come up with a reason why a company would want to alienate a precious few customers it has. In any case, Microsoft messed up the update process too, not once but twice. In this case, we cannot blame the users for resorting to unofficial tactics. They are already stuck with a dead end mobile OS anyways. But hey, good luck, Microsoft.

As if these hiccups were not enough, a number of WP7 users have complained that they are not able to use Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. They are neither able to install apps nor can update them. Apparently, they are getting this annoying message, "Can’t get this info right now. Check back in a little while.” So, what is the latest problem you are facing with your Windows Phone 7 device?
