Social Media and Politics: Obama and the Facebook meeting

In another desperate attempt to appear cool unspectacular President of the USA Obama participated in a town hall meeting at the Facebook headquarters yesterday. The event was streamed live online, with Obama taking questions from the live crowd and from Facebook users via the site.

The president outlined his plans to reduce debt, saying that government spending needed to be cut and that taxes on the rich needed to be higher. At one point he said to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, “People like me and, frankly, you, Mark, paying a little more in taxes.” To which Zuckerberg responded “I’m cool with that.” Thanks Mark, as long as we’ve got your permission to make society fairer, that’s all that matters.

It just all seems so lame to by casually chatting about the future of an economic superpower in the headquarters of a website whilst U.S Jets bomb Libya and Iraq to bits.
Anyway, in Obama's session the standard issues of housing, employment immigration, and health care were brought up whilst there was a distinct lack of questions about online privacy and safety, or the illuminati.

At the end of the day, the reason I'm moaning is that I feel there should be a split between business and politics. What's Zuckerberg got to do with how the world is ran? All he's got is a few million in the bank.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe Obama was simply 'connecting with the kids' but for me, let's keep world politics and social media separated. It's all a bit suspicious that Obama is Zuckerberg are all chummy after numerous examples of social networking acting as a foundation of revolution (i.e. Egypt.)

What’s your opinion on the matter?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
