New App Generator: DIY iPhone/Android Applications

If you’ve got a personal or professional blog (apart from nan, who doesn’t?) why not take your tech credentials to the next level by turning it into an iPhone app? In the past, intense programming and going cross-eyed at scripts just to get a feed onto a handset may have been enough reason to put people off. Well, the guys over at AppLoop will help you to keep the optician at bay with their newly launched, Mobile Application Generator.

The Generator is intended for the tech-unaffiliated and will convert any RSS feed into a brandable mobile application in under two minutes- a whole 28 minutes quicker than a Domino’s Pizza guarantee. There is no programming required, and no software downloads or code maintenance for you to get your head around. AppLoop have taken all of this hard work upon themselves and best of all, it’s free.

The Mobile Application Generator is designed to be easy to use. To get started on your application, simply enter in a blog URL or RSS feed in the box provided. Then enter in the name of your application and upload your own image to use as the logo that will appear on the launch screen.

A colour scheme will then automatically be selected for you based around the first image in your site’s code. You can still customise your colour scheme by selecting from a set of preset schemes, or if you fancy yourself to have a bit of Van Gough in you, you can create your own.

You can then choose a final image to use as an Application Icon which will appear in both the AppStore and on the desktop of the mobile device. Lastly, just categorise your application and select which Application Stores you want your app to appear in (iTunes/Android).

Why bother turning your RSS feed into an application? Well, unlike web-based mobile sites, applications can store data locally so that stories will be available regardless of internet connection availability. This means content will still be available to people if they’re stuck on the underground for 20 minutes.

If you like the sound of getting yourself into the iTunes store, AppLoop are offering access to their generator on an invitation-only basis, so get in touch with them.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
