Rumours are flying around the internet this morning that Sony is ready to throw in the towel and cease production of their PSPGo.
The handheld failed to capture the hearts of anyone really, and seems like a sensible thing to do for Sony, especially with the newly launched Xperia Play – which is very similar, all be it a lot more expensive, and comes with a phone too.
The rumours come all the way from the land of the rising sun and once translated suggest that the Sony will no longer be sending anymore units out to retail in Japan. The unit is equally difficult to find worldwide, though Sony UK has white versions available for sale.
Sony wouldn't confirm or deny anything in a statement to Eurogamer: "It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices. Before the end of the year we are launching NGP, our next generation portable device, which we believe will revolutionise portable gaming. In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand."
The NGP will borrows many feature from the PSPGo, for instance the Go had games available to download rather than on physical media and this is what the NGP is opting for. And the general design looks similar to the newly launched Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.
Presumably Sony will want to clear up factory real estate to kick off NGP production, so this doesn't necessarily come as a huge surprise.
It's a shame that the PSPgo flopped though, but were willing to let it leave gracefully, and we see it more as a technical exercise in media free handhelds something that the NGP will give thanks to.
So if you are planning to pick up a PSPGo, then you might want to move quickly as it might become a collectors item in the coming months.
