We've seen it all with Google. It starts with web success and then it branches out all over the tech/gadget arena. Facebook aren't just going to sit on their social networking throne, there's work to be done! We've seen a tonne of smartphones designed specifically for the likes of Facebook and Twitter such as the INQ's made in partnership with Facebook.
But phones are for fools. Facebook's playing with the real toys now. The big boy toys. In an exciting team made up of the biggest names in the tech industry HP, Dell Inc, Advanced Micro Devices and Intel, to be more specific Zuckerberg aims to take on hardware; bending it and shaping it into a giant F.
Zuckerberg said the project aims to offer specifications and designs for more power-efficient computers that are specifically geared toward running Internet services.”What we found over time is that a lot of the stuff that the mass manufacturers put out wasn’t exactly in line with what we needed and what other social apps needed,” Zuckerberg said at a media event.
By sharing design specifications, he said he hoped to increase availability and demand for the specialized servers.
This all may seem a bit strange but think about the stats- over 500 million users, 30 billion photos, videos shared by users every month. There's got to be top-notch hardware feeding this giant. Optimising the Facebook servers for their job is a positive step for the environment and a positive step for users. The new servers will be 38 percent more energy efficient and cost 24 percent less than off-the-shelf products used to power its service.
