So the world of handheld consoles seems to be going 3D crazy, last week saw the launch of the Nintendo 3DS and the boffins over at Apple have taken notice.
Apple has submitted a 3D patent application to the US Patent and Trademark Office this week and it's not the first time we've heard about their 3D patents.
The document, excitingly entitled, "Systems and Methods for an Image System Using Image Sensors" who ever came up with the title has managed to make something rather exciting into the more boring thing we've ever heard.
It outlines a method for producing 3D pictures using hardware-based approach with dual cameras in a iPhone or iPod combined with seperate luma, chroma and depth/distance sensors.
Whether this means they're looking into adding a 3D cameras or screens isn't clear but the thought of shooting video or pictures in 3D without being able to actually see the 3D results would be an odd decision, so were betting that they are considering both, as there has been a few patents knocking around over the last few months.
Also it's not explained whether this would be a glasses-less version or not, we've been hearing many stories regarding users of the 3DS suffering issues of blurred vision and headaches after using the 3DS, so is glasses-less 3D really what we want ?
Nintendo has responded to the headaches claim "Don't play it so much".
Yes, the solution is as simple as just taking a break when you get a headache. Which is a perfectly reasonable solution, but also one that sort of confirms the fact that playing Nintendo’s glasses-free 3D handheld will give you a headache.
We prefer our gaming to be headache-free, so we can play for 12 straight hours without moving. You know, the way games are meant to be played.
