Microsoft’s Where’s My Update? Website: A Good idea?

Let's be honest here 90% of stories are either Apple or Android. Either nothing ever happens with Windows Phone 7 or nobody cares about it. Either way since its release it's been pretty quite at camp Windows. It's going to take a lot more than this to compete with the big two, but it's a great start.; in an idea which should be envied by Google and Apple alike Microsoft has put up a website that allows owners of Windows Phone 7-based smartphones to find out when they will be offered the copy and paste update.

No, I'm not being sarcastic, it may sound like a boring non-consequential move by Microsoft but it opens up the door to PC/Smartphone interaction. HTC already have an online service which can be used to do things like call lost phones or block them if the worst comes to the worst it's, an extremely useful service and hopefully it's something we'll be seeing more of in the future (especially with cloud emerging.)

Going back to Windows Phone 7; Waiting for an update is extremely frustrated, particularly for us Android users. A tracking website (or even a tracking app) for updates would be great. The problem is though, it would most likely change the date as networks and manufactures delay updates which would just be even more frustrating than not knowing.

The Windows website- “Where’s my phone update” is pretty detailed. It's more than just a page with a date on. It actually works out which phone will get which update and when. First the update is tested by the mobile operator, then Microsoft can take up to 10 days to schedule it for delivery, then finally it will be delivered.

But here go, even after the last stage has been reached it can still take “several weeks” before phone owners receive the message that an update is finally available for them." Microsoft said. On second thoughts Maybe we should wait until companies learn to stick to deadlines before we start making sparkly countdown websites.

When it does come, along with copy and paste, the first major upgrade of Windows Phone 7 also promises shorter start up times for applications and games, and better search features on Microsoft’s application store Marketplace.

Happy updating.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
