Android’s Market Gets Competition From Amazon’s App Store

It's been a long time coming but the Amazon Appstore for Android is here. The store includes both free and paid apps from Android software developers and means that Google fans choice of applications has shot-up overnight. Google’s own Android Market app itself offers more than 150,000 apps and now we've got hundreds if not thousands more.

But what's the use of an Amazon store when we have the Market app? Well like it says above; the amount of apps available to customers has increased which is always a good thing, but the Amazon store is more than a Market app add-on in fact it could become a serious competitor. The Appstore will also offer such perks as allowing users viewing the site on a computer to test out many apps before buying them and giving visitors a paid app for free each day. The first freebie will be Angry Birds Rio, which is a new version of the popular “Angry Birds” game series that ties in with the upcoming animated movie (it normally costs $1.)

Another major feature is that Amazon will offer quality control. All apps will be tested before being added to the Appstore. We'll see how popular the Amazon store proves to be in a few months but it seems like a great way to buy apps for your Android device and I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing some Android Market changes to try and keep up with Amazon's snazzy new store.

It's an exciting time as Android users now have two places to shop which means more choice, which means more competition (and that means price cuts, special offers, new features.) Will it even stop there? Maybe someone will make an app store for RIM or Apple (though the chances of the later agreeing or slim to none.) We could even see more app stores making it onto Android?

More likely is that eventually Android's Market and Amazon's appstore will merge it each other and form some sort of superstore.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
