The internet is at the core of the smartphone but if it's too slow, it's useless and very frustrating. So if you were buying a phone based purely on its web ability what would you opt for Android or iPhone? The latest figures say Android, (and by a large chunk too.)
Apparently 'the latest Android smartphone*' loaded Web pages 52% faster than an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3. This is according to thousands of independent field tests released today by Blaze Software.
* The latest Android smartphone in this case was the Android 2.3 running Google Nexus S (using a version of Chrome.) Apple iPhone ran its own Safari browser.
“Android wasn’t just faster overall, but rather provided a faster browsing experience four times out of five,” the study said.
The tests (which were done using Wi-Fi) were unbiased, the company (Blaze Software) has not affiliation with either Apple or Google; in fact they said themselves that they were surprised with the results.
Apple won't be happy when they hear about this and neither will Apple users but then you have to question the importance of the results. iPhone 5 is on its way, and that could have blisteringly fast internet speeds. Plus as noted the test was Apple against Androids cream of the crop. So it's not a case of Android VS Apple but iPhone VS Nexus S, less high-end Android handsets wouldn't offer nearly as good web browsing.
Internet speed and quality is something that smartphone manufacturers need to spend more time on perfecting. You can give us all the features in the world but if it takes us five minutes to do something that we can do on laptop in ten seconds then what's the point? (obviously an exaggeration) but you get what I’m saying.
The same goes for tablets too. RIM have got it right when the say they're putting all their energy into making the PlayBook perfect for web browsing. Let's hope it pays off for them.
