The final nail has been driven into the coffin of the non iPod MP3 world. It seems iTunes is an essential for music lovers now. When the iPod first emerged there was a small window for rivals to compete and no one really rose to the challenge.
It's far too late now and Apples iPod will continue to dominate the MP3 market until MP3 sales start crashing and get replaced by streaming. Soon we will all be listening to music on our smartphones, and Microsoft for once are on the ball.
Zune-branded music players probably the second biggest MP3 player brand after the iPod have been scrapped due to weak demand leaving Apple with 77% of the digital music player market.
Microsoft has said it will now focus on its smartphone platform and will continue to work on Zune software though no more new hardware will be produced.
