Twitter was the bearer of quite a bit of cyber bullying this weekend as the micro-blogging site updated their iPhone app with a new and rather unpopular 'Quick Bar' or as it has become known as the ‘Dick Bar'.
The Quick Bar appeared in the latest version 3.3 and floats rather annoyingly at the top of your twitter timeline. It displays a list of trends, including promoted trends - swipe your finger and it changes the subject.
This has caused uproar from a group of hardcore users who have combined the new 'Quick Bar' and the name of Twitter CEO Dick Costolo to create the very amusing but rather mean 'Dick Bar' and yes there is a hash tag which is the aptly named #dickbar.
The uproar has even spread to iTunes store where people have been airing the grieviances on the user reviews section which has seen the app go from 5 star straight to a 2 star in one weekend and stands at over 2000 reviews since the update.
Communications guru for twitter Sean Garret said” “Twitter has submitted an update to Apple yesterday for their iPhone app. It fixes some bugs & makes it so the quickbar doesn't overlay on Tweets.”
Not a complete victory but at least the Quick Bar is slightly less annoying.
Did Twitter go far enough? Banishing the Quick Bar from tweets but not the timeline? Will this open the floodgates to lots of banner advertising on Twitter? Should we object to ads on Twitter? Let us know below. And if you like use the hash tag #dealwithit or #dickbar – which both just so happen to be trending topics. Let’s see who wins.
