Huawei May Land London Underground Cellular Network Deal

Since 2012 Olympics date is getting closer and closer, London is looking to modernize its infrastructure. And it seems like that Chinese mobile Phone manufacturer Huawei is going to lap up the deal which would enable it to set up cellular network for London Underground. Under this deal, Huawei will provide telecom equipments whereas Thales would be responsible for their installation and maintenance.

The system is likely to cost over £100 million as the equipments will be installed along the tunnel roof. Since ideally the project needs to be completed before the Olympic dates, there does not seem to be many companies in the running for the contract. There had been some concerns about hiring a Chinese firm for this purpose too. However, the company has issued as statement claiming to have "no link with the Chinese government." In any case, BT is already using Huawei's equipments, so this should not be a big concern. So, let's see how the installation of mobile network underground will change our commuting habits.
