Here’s an interesting bit of Facebook news for you.
The social-networking site has just introduced two new relationship status indicators for the LGBT community. U.S. residents can now choose between "In a domestic partnership" and "In a civil union," along with the usual selection of relationship options: Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It's complicated, In an open relationship, Widowed, Separated and Divorced.
A Facebook rep said- "This has been a highly requested feature from users. We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook."
Some gay users have taken offence to the new options saying that Facebook was adopting the "separate and unequal" policies of the many states that do not allow gay marriage. You just can't win can you?
But GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios is pleased with the move. "When millions of Facebook users see these relationship status options, they gain a greater understanding of the legal inequalities faced by loving and committed same-sex couples in so many states today" he said.
It's only a small change but surely anything that helps promote equality is a positive thing.
