Activision Cancels Guitar Hero and DJ Hero.

When Guitar Hero emerged it became an instant phenomenon. It seemed children and adults alike could not get enough of the plastic guitar, and suddenly Metallica weren't just for long-haired, ripped-jeaned veteran rock fans.

It seemed that the gaming franchise was unstoppable, especially with its little brother DJ Hero. But despite its popularity it has been (excuse the pun) axed.

Activision said in a press release that “due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.”

Despite glittering reviews for the latest Guitar Hero effort, Warriors of Rock Activision say there's just no money in music gaming anymore.

“Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply can’t make these games profitably based on current markets and demand" they said.

In company shake-up Activision also announced that it was halting development on True Crime: Hong Kong.

Activision said: “These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences.”

Maybe kids will learn to play real guitar now?

I guess they realised that they can’t compete with Rock Band.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
