Buckingham Palace has revealed today that the Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be broadcast in 3D.
Apparently Sky had made arrangements to be able to broadcast in 3D but Partrick Harrison, press secretary to the Prince of Wales, announced via email: “I’m afraid I have to say that we have decided not to progress with 3D coverage of the service on this occasion."
They did give us a explanation though, Harrison said: “There are a number of reasons for this, most notably the additional camera footprint in the abbey, the relatively small (albeit growing) audience for 3D, and our desire to not be distracted away from negotiating and facilitating the optimal 2D, radio, photographic and online coverage of the day.”
It is a little disappointing that the small few who have 3D aren't going to be able to get the broadcast in 3D - especially with future events like the Olympics taking their first steps in 3D.
Harrison concluded: “I know you have all become increasingly enthusiastic about 3D and I’m sorry that this will come as a disappointment." Adding: “I hope you feel the process we have gone through will be helpful for other live events and of course we do not rule out facilitating 3D at some point in the future.”
So don't expect the wedding of the century in 3D - but we'd bet that Sky will the do the queens speech in 3D - as they now have the rights to the Christmas message.
